Miracle Maca - Culinary Therapy

Miracle Maca

Maca is a Peruvian root vegetable. Root vegetables are, as the name implies, the root of a plant. Roots like Maca give us a warming, grounding energy that’s perfect during the colder winter months. Unlike all roots, maca has achieved superfood status in the nutrition realm, and here’s why…

Maca grows in the Andean plateaus, high above where any other food can grow. It’s ability to create life under such conditions is why it has been revered throughout history.

Maca is an adaptogen, meaning it has the unique ability to balance our bodies: our hormones, brain, digestive system, heart, and musculature. It has developed a reputation as a powerful strength enhancer, will increase your stamina, and boost your energy levels.

Roots like Maca are fiber-rich. Maca is also high in protein and easy to absorb minerals like iron, magnesium, calcium and potassium.

The health benefits of Maca root include:

  • Alleviates bloating
  • Reduces symptoms of PMS
  • Enhances mood and alleviates depression
  • Helps reduce menopausal symptoms
  • Reduces symptoms of chronic fatigue
  • Improves memory
  • Increases fertility
  • Alleviates anemia
  • Improves sex drive

Buying, storing and preparation:

Generally, Maca is purchased as a raw, organic powder. Because it is a warming food, it is best used in colder climates and during colder weather.

Quick serving ideas:

  • Add a spoonful of Maca to your smoothies and green drinks
  • Add it to tea
  • Sprinkle it in nut milk
  • Add Maca to your favorite dessert recipe
  • Sprinkle it on salad
  • Spoon it into your favorite fall or winter soup
Personally, I love Maca in my favorite winter smoothies and recommend it frequently to my clients.
Note: If you are trying Maca for the first time, start slowly with 1 tsp and increase slowly to allow your body time to adapt.

Your Simple Action Plan:
Go to your local health food store and purchase Maca powder this week. Then use it! Try 1-2 tsp in your favorite soup or smoothie.
