I love this time of year for its sunny days and fresh vegetables. But inevitably, it’s the time of year that I get lots of questions about weight loss.  Why do diets fail and why does weight loss persist?  This is the #1 question I’m hearing these days.

Everyone knows you need to exercise more and eat less to lose weight right? Wrong.

When you eat less, your body goes into starvation mode and will start conserving calories. That means, a slow-down in your metabolism. Exercising to counteract this effect may boost your metabolism, but it also boosts your appetite. Often, you end up feeling hungry, deprived, frustrated and not a pound lighter.

If you want to lose a few pounds, ten pounds or more, let’s start by shifting your focus to what works. Here are 5 simple changes you can make today for effortless weight loss.

1. Quality is the New Calorie

Rather than focus on how much you’re eating, pay closer attention to quality. The process of refining foods and putting them into a box destroys the nutrients in the food, not to mention the chemicals and additives that are wreaking havoc on your weight. Generally speaking, if it comes in a box or a bag, don’t eat it. Put simply, eat clean, real foods.

2. Sweet Victory

Growing up, my father would periodically diet by giving up sweets. He was right to give up sugar, but human beings naturally crave sweets. Focus on eliminating the white stuff, it destroys your waistline.  But while you’re doing that, satisfy your sweet tooth with higher quality sweeteners and healthy desserts like my recipe for avocado pudding.

3. The Power of Flax

Ground flaxseed can be used as a weight loss tool because it’s fiber-rich, helping to keep you full and prevent overeating. Flax will also support the health of your digestive system and help to balance your hormones, both of which are priorities when it comes to stubborn weight issues.

4. Hydrate! Hydrate! Hydrate!

Likely, you already know the importance of hydration and yet most of us aren’t drinking enough water. If you’re drinking anything other than water, give it up (for now, at least). That means alcohol, soft drinks, and even fruit juice. Drink early and often! Start your day with a glass of water with ½ lemon. And remember to carry a large bottled water with you for easy access throughout the day.

5. Eat Fat and Lose Weight

The latest in nutritional science has debunked the the myth that fat makes you fat. Actually, the right fats are essential to a healthy weight and a healthy body. My favorites include extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil, avocado, nuts and omega-3 fats found in fatty fish like salmon and sardines.
